I am by no means an expert but find your question interesting. Would you
care to elaborate on what
you want to do with this lab?
Teach basic OS operations and office programs? Does it have to be
Microsoft?
Teach programming?
Offer internet access for students?
Anything else? Use it as an internet cafe to generate revenue?
What is the target demographic, how old and on what level of education are
the future users?
What are your scanning/printing/audio/video demands?
Is this a low budget operation, will you be buying new or used? In what
country are you buying?
Are you able to make up for money with expertise (e.g. using Open Source)?
Is there internet access, and if so, what kind?
Do you have to care for electricity yourself?
Is dirt & climate protection an issue?
My off-the-hand guess would be to get 20 identical (so you'll be able to
slaughter one to get replacement parts) refurbished desktop PCs. Processing
power level depending on your budget and demands. Obviously Ethernet network
cards. Depending on your setup you'll get another PC as a router.
Microsoft vs. Linux: On this topic I am just going to say, if you want
your students to find out about computers Windows won't particularly help.
Personally I'd only take MS if I'd really be teaching Office stuff to people
where I know that's what their employers will use.
If you answer some of the questions above I am sure you'll get a lot of
suggestions and links.
So long, Björn
