In the cold dry air of winter, the dust blowing in from the Gobi desert
plus the air polution give you a very good chance of developing a
respiratory problem. But other than that it's a fascinating place.

When I was there 2 winters ago, Winter, dust in Beijing was not a
serious issue. It was only noticeable in some wide open streets. It
was not too crowded + no Western tourists!
Daytime temperatures can be quite OK for walking around in. If you
visit the Great Wall, be prepared for cold and windy weather.
Make sure you take some warm clothes & gloves.

For an alternative type of accommodation (Bed and Breakfast or Self
Catering) have a look at www.bb-china.com

For freezing temperatures: warm shoes, warm gloves, warm head dress. And
warm clothing for rest of the body.
